The Gastinger Case: Principle or vested interest

In case you’ve just tuned in, you might probably hear that the Austrian Justice Minister Karin Gastinger has left the right-wing party BZÖ (Bündnis Zukunft Österreich or the Alliance for the Future of Austria), six days before the elections. Meaning, there will be options, that can only depend tomorrow morning after the meeting with the chancellor Wolfgang Schüssel, if she will stay independent, having no political party like her colleague Finance Minister Karl Heinz Grasser, in the remaining days of the present government.

The reason: she finds the migration policy/anti-immigrant stance of her former party doesn’t connive with her views in life. She has started to think about it after Peter Westenthaler, the BZÖ party leader and candidate, declared proudly of deporting the 300,000 immigrants living in Austria.

On the other hand, there are speculations that BZÖ, due to the its poor standing in the poll surveys, would just disappear after this year’s general elections.

And Gastinger’s decision is just expected from someone who wants to save her ass from, obviously, a sinking ship that is BZÖ. At least this is what the opposition has thought so. The Green party chef Alexander van Bellen wasn’t impressed and even commented that her realisation was too late.

And if you would look at it, he has a point.

Coming from a Third World country, corruption and abuse of power have always been part of the political landscape that sadly numbs the people. In the First World, the intensity of poor governance might be lower and the echo is not defeaning. That is to say, the world, whatever it is (first or third), is far from perfect.

As an immigrant, it was admiring to hear Gastinger’s pride speaking out. Not for the sake of the thousands of immigrants living in Austria but the ability to look at herself in the mirror without hurting anybody.

But if the audience could look deeper you would never know if it’s just a facade, a mask to hide her vested interest.
And what Ms Karin Gastinger has to do now is to prove to her detractors that she is the Real McCoy.
