The best and the worst

Last weeks and this weeks saturday provided for the best and the worst cultural event I attended the last couple of months.

Last saturday we went to the Donaufestival in Krems to see the girls-punk-band Sleater Kinney. It was great, wonderful, energizing. The girls look totally young! The context was also quite interesting as the Donaufestival is kind of “high culture” but filled with interesting acts this year.

This saturday we went to the “Vienna Writer’s Festival” at the Radio Kulturhaus to hear Irvine Welsh read. I swear, I have not experienced something as strange as this for a long time. Before the reading a “conversation” was scheduled. Five elderly men (Irvine Welsh, Ishmael Reed, Robert Stone, Michael Augustin and a so called “Moderator” Michale March) were sitting on stage and talking about … nothing. They pretended to talk about Casanova, but in fact it was a totally confused discussion on some catastrophy that would hit the planet soon and about the necessity to leave earth. It was also about William S. Burroughs being an evil man and Irvine Welsh watching Casanova when he was young to see tits. Do the Old Boys really talk like this, if we let them? Now, this discussion was so bad, that we did not stay to hear Irvine Welsh read, which is a pity.
