British Bookshop-Mariahilferstrasse closes down
We regret to announce that our shop at Mariahilferstrasse 4 will be closing as of 1st March 2008.
We wish to thank all of our customers for their loyalty over the years and hope that we will see you soon at our main shop at Weihburggasse 24, 1010 Vienna.
Let’s face it, it must be the overpriced books. And then, there’s the practicality of ordering them via the World Wide Web. (Thank you Amazon.de?)
Whatever it is the British Bookshop is having a difficult time finding customers.
Anyway, the BBS’ first district branch is holding a book-sale event. It promises big reductions on many items. See you there.

Oh sad! I remember having a lot of fun there a few years ago. That was a really prime location. The books were really pricey, but there is something about a book shop that online just can’t beat. It’s like visiting a church, verses visiting the church’s website. Something is lost when your blessing comes in the form of an email.
That’s OK, I’d be worried if this happened to Shakespeare&co.
i used to love BBS but after i found out that I still had other options, I went there just to browse for titles.
I never really found it to be such a great place. The prices were ridiculous (okay, that’s a problem with every english language bookstore here) and the selection was nothing special. I agree that it would be a shame if Shakespeare and Co went down, but I wouldn’t mind if their prices did.
I’ve always been amazed that any english language bookstore in Austria has been able to compete with the internet. It’s really hard to justify paying 3 times the price with none of the convenience.
