Buy Shit Saturday

People on the streets

One of my favorite things about traveling is stumbling across local holidays and observances that you’d never hear about outside of that area. Chicago has Sweetest Day and it seems that Vienna has Buy Shit Saturday. I accidentally walked into this without even knowing about it this morning, but apparently this is a time honored tradition where this major shopping street is blocked off and every single person in Vienna is required to walk around from shop to shop, form crazy huge unorganized queues, and of course buy shit. I’m also under the impression this is some kind of local secret because all the Vienna locals I know who I asked about it denied it’s existence. Of course the photos I took don’t lie, see for yourself.

Langer Samstag. Long Saturday. I remember it from my youth. 17 yrs ago when I lived there, most stores were closed from Saturday @ noon until Monday morning, so Long Saturday was a way to catch up on shopping whether it was for kitch or for food and drink. We never got the hang of it and always ended up without the necessities on Saturday evening. Off to the bar we went.

I picked up some amazing trinkets at the Naschmarkt on long saturday.

It’s certainly a holiday, and it’s going to be every few saturdays for the next few weeks. They even re-route transit around it because they put up a sign at my bus stop today that said, “sorry, sucker. no cross town traffic for you on Saturdays until Christmas.”

Another funny holiday they have here is Window Shopping Sunday where people stroll the major shopping streets looking in the windows even though every single store is closed and has been since 5PM Saturday.
