Vegan Schnitzel!

the bar, and part of the whiskey selection at Rupps

When I decided I was going to come to Vienna and spend a good chunk of time here the thing I heard over and over again from friends who live here (as well as those who don’t) was that it would be next to impossible to be vegan in Vienna. I’ve been vegan for almost 15 years so I’m not planning on changing my diet based on a trip, but I was little concerned that Vienna might be the first place I’ve been to that didn’t have plentiful vegan options.

Luckily this has turned out to not be the case at all. I was searching on Tupalo and found Rupps. After reading a few reviews I was hooked and rounded up the posse and headed there straight away. Here’s a few pics I took while there but the combo vegetarian/vegan restaurant & Irish whiskey bar is pretty mind blowing. I can see myself spending a lot of time there in the coming weeks. I had the Schnitzel and the Apfelstrudel. The latter of which was amazing. They had a ton of vegan options that I can’t wait to go back and try out. No english menu but the stall all seemed happy to speak to speak to me, of course I was giving them money but still. It’s located at Arbeitergasse 46, which is just a short tram ride from where I’m staying at the Museumsquartier so yeah, I’ll be there again soon. /swoon

I wish I’d known about that when I lived there! I was a vegetarian for my whole four months there and never had a problem – I think it’s easier to be vegetarian there than in middle America, when it comes down to it. Doesn’t surprise me that your vegan-hood is easily accommodated.

Glad you stumbled upon Tupalo! It’s good stuff, and one of the guys is a vegan, I think. I found a ton of vegetarian/vegan stuff there (although I’m not strictly veggie/vegan, we don’t do a lot of meat & try to avoid dairy) that, were it not for Tupalo, I would have *never* known existed.

That’s one of the things I love/hate about Vienna. There is *so much* here, in such a dense arrangement, that one has virtually limitless options. The problem is that it’s sometimes very difficult to discover what’s available. I suppose there are worse problems to have….

This is so great! I’m excited about going to this place when I’m in Vienna. After all of the warnings about being vegan there, it’s good to know there are some comforts for spoiled California vegans.

Hi Sean, glad Tupalo helped you to find Rupps! One of my favorite places for vegan schnitzel in Vienna.

After being vegan in the US, I’ve found it actually REALLY easy to be vegan here, once you learn of all of the shops, restaurants and cafes that have vegan-options.

This is all great to hear. I’m in Vienna through December and looking for all the tips I can get. Perhaps I’ll even get to meet some of you while here!
