What I wonder about in this city

Can please somebody explain to me, why I have to be half an hour early at the cinema to pick up my tickets when I call to make a reservation for them? But I can come at anytime if I don’t?
If I make a reservation at a restaurant I don’t have to be there half an hour earlier? My airplane ticket isn’t gone just because someone flying stand-by has arrived earlier than me? What does “reservation” mean in cinema terms?
I mean, calling the cinema to tell them you are coming is giving them more security in planning, the knowledge of how many seats will be sold and adds workload to the side of the customer - and therefore he is punished by having to be there earlier otherwise his tickes will be gone? Is it just a plan to make me buy sweets and softdrinks?

well, actually, it could happen to you at the airport that if you’re only a minute late for the check in, your seat on the plane might have been given to someone else, even someone without a booking.
by the way, thanks for your blog, guys. i enjoy reading it very much.
I’ve had friends miss flights because they were only 55 minuets early to the gate, opposed to 1 full-hour early. Apparently, they’re all too happy to give your seat away at little or no compensation.
There are probebly a lot of kids booking and never coming to pick their tickets up..
For one it is indeed a good way of making people buy popcorn and drinks, because in Vienna there’s more money in selling tickets than food. So they try to boost sales, for one.
Two, you know that movie tickets in Vienna have a row and a seat number on them. So if people reserve a whole bunch of seats, others are often seated apart, because there’s only single seats available spread out through the room.
These are just thoughts, hope they help! I guess what it comes down to is that movies theaters tend to be smaller in Vienna and the tickets are more expensive. Hence, people look at it more like a special experience rather than just going to watch a film - I could be wrong though. I haven’t been home in almost a year, I’ve grown too accustomed to US ways :)
