The Butterkäse dilmma part 2
I know I have mentioned my dilemma with not ever being able to buy a roll with Butterkäse in an Austrian supermarket before (“Butterkäse or Gouda?”) but today the story has reachead a new level. To get the history on this, please read the old entry. Here is the new addition:
So I walk into the Merkur underneath the Gerngross on Mariahilferstrasse. A young, somewhat chubby but nevertheless friendly young salesgirl asks for my wishes. I say: “Two rolls with Butterkäse, please”.
“What…”
“Two rolls with butterkäse please.”
Girl looks for help to the older saleswoman beside her. I guess she is new to the job. The old woman looks at her and says: “Edamer or Gouda. It doesn’t matter.”
The girl grabs for some cheese, so I say to her: “Are you giving me Gouda.”
“Yes, or Edamer.”
“No, if there is no Butterkäse, I want Gouda.”
“Yes, or Edamer.” Another look the older saleswoman, who throws all her authority into the struggle and says: “They all taste nearly the same, anyway.”
“No” I say “There is a big difference between Butterkäse and Gouda and Edamer.”
Both women look at me as if I am some kind of lunatic. I say: “Please give me Gouda.”
The older woman grabs a metal tray that is underneath the counter and says “See, this is where we have th sliced cheese for sandwiches. All right.”
I have no idea, why she is telling me that for. The younger woman fixes my rolls. Then she hands them over to me, asking if there is anything else I want.
I say no thanks, wondering what they would have given me if I had asked for something else. Probably just something or anything, because it doesn’t matter anyway.
