Digging through the shit

This entry is based totally on one news-bit that I read today: The Flakturm (airplane defense tower from WW2) in the Augarten is being renovated. Amongst other things the workers have to get rid of approximately 4 meters of birdshit that has accumulated inside the towers over the last decades.

I know the flaktürme have been mentioned herein before, but I am not exactly sure where or when. Anyway, they are some of the less famous sights of Vienna but still tell a lot about the city’s history. Actually these towers are built to last forever, but the one in the Augarten was hit bad by bombs and by ammunition exploding inside after the war was over. Renovation started in summer of last year. There seem to have been various problems with the renovation, for instance five ceilings have collapsed. These days big parts of concrete are extracted from the tower. Cranes have to lift parts up to 50 tons of weight. Still, I wonder what to do with 1.200 cubic meters of birdshit?

What about “Guano”? I totally support “the economic exploitation of bird shit”. What can be the only source of income for the Republic of Nauro till 2000, can always be a little extra money for Vienna.

Why is it felt necessary to renovate the Flakturme? Why not just leave them as they are?

@simo: I am not sure it is quite the same shit.
@richard: as I heard the walls started to bulge out due to cracks in the wall
