Vienna’s famous Opera Ball

vie_g_opernball.jpg

The Vienna Opera Ball is tomorrow evening. It is the 50th ball since re-opening after the WW2 and in all its glory and glitter will once again carry the picture of Vienna as the most wonderful and romantic city over the world, where peace and harmony reigns in the forever perfect melodies of the waltz and opera arias.

And, as every year, I won’t be there nor will I watch the live-broadcast on tv. Probably because tickets are 215 € upwards, which is not counting the formal evening dress necessary and extra costs for tables, seating and food (a pair of frankfurter aka wiener goes for a measly 7 €). Probably because I don’t dance unless I am drunk.

I have to disagree with Rafael in one way as the Opern-ball is a spectacle. I got to see the live brodcast last night for the very first time [with Mr Sundome Haider in command.] It is a night of elegance not seen on such a grand scale my side of the English channel, but alas it struck me that when the ‘Debs’ finished their little bit, it was like a rugby scrum to get onto the floor and waltz… and maybe Paris H. would have felt more at home if someone had bought her a hot dog. Why on earth was she invited anyhow ?

She wasn’t exactly invited. She was there because Vienna businessman Richard Lugner paid for her to be there (see http://vienna.metblogs.com/archives/2007/02/leave_him_alone.phtml). ‘Invited’ is really the wrong word to use when talking about these Lugner celebrities at the Opera Ball. They are paid to be there, so it’s really more of a personal appearance.
