Our “Wiener Zeitung”!

The “Wiener Zeitung” (Viennese newspaper) is a paper founded in 1703 under the name Wiennerisches Diarium. The first issue appeared on August 8, 1703 which makes the Wiener Zeitung one of the oldest, still published newspapers in the world.

The “Wiener Zeitung” is also the official publication used by the Government of the Republic of Austria for formal announcements. Such announcements, for example, of newly passed laws, civil service vacancies and changes in the commercial register, are printed in the Official Journal insert of the Wiener Zeitung.

In the year 1645 Queen Christina and Chancellor Oxenstjerna of Sweden founded an official newspaper called “Post och Inrikes Tidningar”. As of 1791 the publishing became the responsibility of The Royal Swedish Academy (the same institution that awards the Noble prize in literature). Rightly or wrongly it proclaims in its masthead. “The World’s Oldest Newspaper.” As of 1/1 this year allt that is, however, history since the conservative (!) Government has decided that PoIT henceforth should be available only on the web.

This should give the Wiener Zeitung the chance to become the oldest newspaper in the world if they can stick it out for another 18 years.

(PS: What is UWG? Unerlaubte Werbungsgesetz?)
