Vienna’s soft white underbelly

Not really, but I saw “Trautmann” on TV yesterday and I have to say I like it. The crime inspector Trautmann is the prototypical Viennese male: grumpy, cynic, wasted. He drinks and smokes and gives a shit about stepping on anybody’s toes. And he looks that way. Of course, it is fiction, but these people are as real as the Prater in the background of the movie. I see Trautmann-wannabees everyday in the subway.
This tv-movie gave a nice impression of Vienna during the Seventies as imagined by crime-authors. And some of the dialogues were downright great, e.g. Trautmann: “Können wir die Streife loswerden?” (”Let’s lose the patrol car.”) and his superior takes up the mic and says “Schleicht’s Euch.” (”Get lost.”)

Moreover, there were a lot of well known faces in this tv movie, even if some were hidden behind masks (see above) so we were shouting out names all the time like “Hey, that’s Karl Marcovics” (and he looked great as a prison inmate), “look, Otto Wanz” (wrestling Champion), “that’s Gerald Votava” (from FM4), “and that’s Roman Gregory” (former singer of Viennese band Alkbottle), “hey, that’s Thomas Maurer” (the comedian) and “hey, I know this guy from somewhere…”

    I admit, i don’t understand the hype.
I watched one episode and it was boring. Just a combination of prejudices, the usual TV-suspects and Schmähs which had been funny a few decades ago.

My favourite part was the matrix-kung-fu-or-what-ever-that-was-Kampfszene at the end. Just glorius :)
