Overheard in the Tramway:

“If you have the money, Vienna is the best city in the… in the … Universe. But if you have to get money, you’re fucked.”

True? I don’t know, I think it’s possible to live rather well without money. How about you?

Actually, I think the sentiment is true for just about any city in the world. Although I do feel that especially in Vienna, with that multitude of cultural and gastronomical offerings, living without money is a bit frustrating at times. But yes, it’s definitely possible to live in Vienna without any money…only not as happily as you could if you had some.

I think it’s different: while life without money is fucking annoying mostly everywhere, it’s rather easy in Vienna. If you’re not too picky, you can get free meals, free lodging, and can enjoy the parks and free culture.

I think, more so than any big city I’ve ever been to, Vienna is *better* than most for low cost living.

Now, of course, if I had *no* money (as in, couldn’t even afford a place to live), I’d prefer to live somewhere much warmer.

I’d say that New York City is the one that will break you down the most if you have very little money. Gruelling.

I found it really easy to live cheaply in Vienna versus other places I’ve lived, and versus where I live now and am from (Toronto.)

It seems like there’s so much that you can do that’s cheap or free, mainly because there are so many wonderful public spaces to hang out in. Also, unlike in North America (just as an example), you can drink alcohol outside. This is important because it means a sunny afternoon can be spent with a six-pack and some friends in Volkspark (cost: a few euros) versus on a patio where each beer costs as much as that six pack to be ‘legal’ in North America. I also found rents in Vienna incredibly reasonable.

My vote for worst place to be without money: London. Though I would imagine Oslo, Tokyo, etc. are brutal too!
