I just bought my first camera ever! And what shiny beautiful pictures it makes!
To introduce this new camera, and myself, to metblogs.vienna, i want to show you around a place that i’m passing by day by day: the beautiful Arenbergpark in Vienna’s third district.
This is one of the two Arenbergpark Flaktürme. Towers like these are spread in pairs of two across Vienna, and have been designed and built for Air Defense during World War 2. The one you see is the control tower (Leitturm). Similiar Towers had also been built in Berlin and Hamburg, but have later been destroyed or severly altered. The ones in Arenbergpark are the oldest ones in Vienna, and the only remaining ones which are rectangular and don’t have the round Viennese Special Form.
Right now this one is used for Storage of Contemporary Art. Another one in Esterhazypark contains a big Aquarium, the ‘House of the Sea’. Others are empty. Future uses of these buildings are heavily discussed in Vienna. It is an urban tale, that they just aren’t blown up, because the needed explosion would also destroy the surrounding buildings, including my apartement, which is just two blocks away. I feel that they are really interesting architectonically, and should be preserved and reused!
