austria = not urban

A warning to those who (through this weblog) get the impression, that Austria as such is a (post)modern urban place: This is not the case. It is still a catholic and rural, not to say indigenous place to live. The proof: The Austrian television’s summershow “Expedition Österreich” provides the nation with a survival narrative of strong and beautiful people, that have to make their way from Tyrole to Vienna through the wilderness. Of course we find all the usual voyeuristic, intimate stuff of a real-life-soap, but moreover we see the shrinking group perambulate the whole raugh territory of Austria. The asserted loss of territoriality caused by globalization, digitalization etc. is contested by pictures of unspoilt nature and the close-up observation of a group of adventurers, a kind of pre-modern “community of fate / faith”. Well, that’s the way the theorycookie crumbles …
